Blended Intensive Programmes

A New Way of Learning

The Erasmus+ 2021-2027 program introduces an exciting new format: short-term, blended academic programs that combine innovative learning and teaching methods, including online collaboration. Known as Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP), these programmes offer to students and staff an enriching educational experience through both in-person and virtual components.

What is a Blended Intensive Programme?

A BIP is designed and implemented by at least three higher education institutions from a minimum of three EU Member States or other associated countries. These programmes bring together participants in a collaborative online space, allowing them to work simultaneously on specific tasks integrated into the intensive program’s curriculum.

What is the Virtual Component of the BIP?

The virtual portion of a BIP is essential, as it facilitates joint online work that enhances the program’s learning outcomes. This virtual component can take place before, during, or after the on site segment, making it a flexible and interactive part of the learning process.

This innovative blend of online and on-site learning offers a unique opportunity for students and educators to develop skills, share knowledge, and engage across borders.

Essential Information on Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes

Eligible Costs Covered by the Erasmus+ Grant, awarded only to the coordinating university

  • Preparation, development, implementation, and monitoring of the programme.
  • Virtual activities, general management, and coordination (e.g., staff salaries).
  • Costs may include creating educational materials, renting venues or equipment, excursions, communication activities, translation and interpretation, preparatory visits, and administrative tasks.
  • Travel and accommodation expenses for participants are not covered, each participant should apply for financing at the home university.

Eligible Participating Organizations

  • A BIP must be developed by at least three higher education institutions (HEIs) from three EU member states or associated countries with an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE).
  • One institution must act as the coordinator and can also serve as the host institution.

Other organizations within the host country may also host participants during physical activities.

Participating HEIs sending students or staff must hold an ECHE or be recognized by relevant authorities and have signed inter-institutional agreements before the mobility.

Activity Location

Physical activities can be held at the host institution or elsewhere within the host country.

Activity Duration

  • Physical mobility must last between 5 and 30 days.
  • Virtual mobility duration is flexible, but combined physical and virtual activities must grant participants at least 3 ECTS credits.

Eligible Participants

  • Students:
    • Enrolled in an HEI in an EU member state, associated country, or non-associated third country.
    • Must be pursuing a recognized degree or equivalent qualification (up to PhD level).
  • Staff:
    • Academic and administrative staff from HEIs in eligible countries.
    • Invited teaching staff from enterprises or organizations outside HEIs with ECHE.
  • Minimum/Maximum Participants:
    • A minimum of 10 participants is required for funding eligibility (excluding teaching/training staff).
    • No maximum number is set, but a balanced ratio of students and staff is recommended to ensure quality.

Funding Participation

  • Students and staff from an ECHE-holding institution in a Programme Country (KA131) can participate with Erasmus+ funding.
  • Participation is free, but optional extracurricular activities may incur fees.

Students and staff from non-associated third countries can join if their institution participates in a parallel externally funded Erasmus+ project. However, such participants are not included in the minimum required number for funding.

Grants

In addition, students can receive lump sums for travel costs as follows:
