GreenGenium at Iași Coffee Festival: 60 kg of coffee grounds collected for composting

TUIASI students promoting sustainability in the community

Between 14–16 November, students from the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași (TUIASI) involved in the GreenGenium project — a winner of the Ingenium Student Partnership call — joined the Iași Coffee Festival to showcase how sustainability can be integrated into everyday life.

GreenGenium aims to transform organic waste into valuable resources, and this event was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how spent coffee grounds can be reused responsibly.

60 kg of coffee grounds collected and transformed into natural compost

Over three days, the student team collected around 60 kg of coffee grounds  donated by baristas and vendors at the festival.

What happened to the collected grounds?

The coffee grounds were:

• layered with leaves

• placed in the GreenGenium compost bin

• transformed into natural fertilizer

• prepared for future planting and sustainability activities on campus

Engaging visitors in composting and circular economy topics

At the GreenGenium stand, visitors learned:

• how composting works

• why coffee grounds are valuable

• ways to reuse resources at home

• simple daily actions that reduce waste

The friendly and curious atmosphere made it easy to inspire meaningful environmental awareness.
